In general, this means sending voice information in digital form in discrete packets rather than in the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). A major advantage of VOIP and Internet telephony is that it avoids the tolls charged by ordinary telephone service. Definition 2. - VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a term used for voice being transported via the internet, intranet or data links to the internet regardless whether H.323, SIP or a proprietary standard is used. The data network involved might be the Internet itself, or a corporate intranet, or managed networks used by local or long distance carriers and ISPs. Who runs the network doesn't matter -- what does is the fact that you're taking voice (i.e., analog information) and encoding it digitally, converting it into packets, and then using a data network to move those packets along the most efficient path to their destination, where they get reassembled and delivered in the format they started in: voice.
